Valentini has captured in this print a golden sheen surrounding the
image of the angel. In art history from the Byzantine age on, one
usually finds a mystical metallic background behind heavenly
characters. In Orvieto, a town of numerous churches, one encounters
angels at every corner. Here in a nod to Renaissance tradition, she
bears the flowers sacred to Mary, the lily and the rose.
